I’ve been looking into Sous Vide cooking for over a year now reading reviews etc. I finally pulled the plug on this model and couldn’t be happier with this purchase. We’ve used it everyday for over a month now. You name it we’ve cooked it (eggs, steak, pork roast, vegetables, fish, desert toppings.

Weeell. This was an amazing cooker. I mean, it was it did was it was supposed to do.: It cooked things. It was a kitchen appliance. Life moved on.
Then Anova pushed an update to their app that requires you to pair your kitchen appliance with your facebook profile. I’m not kidding here.

If you’ve done any research into sous vide devices, you know that ANOVA and ChefSteps rule the roost. Objectively, the Joule bested the competition in every respect that mattered to me: efficiency, speed, and size. It’s smaller, it heats water quicker, and the minimalist style appealed to me.

UPDATE (8/23/14): Both warmers that I have still work really well. I used them less this summer since we have had a hot one. I do use one about once a week and am very pleased with it.
UPDATE (12/16/13): The warmer is still going strong! I have two inserts and alternate them almost daily.

First of all, a disclaimer; this is going to be a technical review for the WiFi version of the cooker. I am an IT consultant with network engineering experience.
The device is great on paper. The actual part that does the immersion cooking is as far as I can tell, flawless.

First, I have to tell you I am a 73 yr. young widower. I finally got tired of quick meals, TV meals, eating out, etc. Soo, I finally decided that it was time I grew up and started learning how to cook.
I did a lot of research on slow cooker’s and decided on the Hamilton Beach 33967.

UPDATE: The cord is 44" long. It is not retractable or detachable - it lays on the kitchen counter.
UPDATE: Yes - it is Made in China
UPDATE: No - you cannot use the insert on top of the stove nor in the oven. The insert has stay-cool handles made of hard plastic.

I returned the item because Anova updated the phone app to force you to buy Wifi access. My model was bluetooth only and I could no longer control the device via the app. Plus, my model didn’t come with Wifi Access, so I was forced to use the manual control.

3 Rd time I used it I placed stew in it for no more than 8 hours on low overnight. Woke up at 4 am and smelled a weird chemical smell. Went into the kitchen and the crockpot was melting! How can you trust a product like this that you can’t use unless you have to monitor it. I’m lucky I woke up.

Anova changed the app to require a login just to cook a meal. They are apparently more interested in mining data than pleasing their customers. I bought the Bluetooth version so I could monitor it, but now the app requires a login, and I object to logging in just to monitor this expensive device.

I am not one who is easily impressed. While I admit a lifelong love for cooking, and the associated collection of kitchen tools, I can tell you I have sent a number of supposedly high-end items back because they did not live up to the hype.

I bought this crock pot a little leary because of some of the reviews on here saying it gets too hot, burns food, etc. I thought for the price it would be easy to return and/or replace if needed.

UPDATE: Feb. 17, 2015. I have used this Crock-Pot a dozen times since writing my review … and it gets better and better! I’ve made casseroles, breakfast dishes, beans, roast, ribs, Mexican food dishes - all just great (including the chicken/rice recipe with the rice cooked in the Crock-Pot)!

9/17/2020 update: Just about seven years on, and I’m still relying heavily on the Wonderbag. When I got it I thought it was a clever idea and something I might use once in a while. But even now, I still use it all the time.
It has held up well to all the abuse.
